MOON GARDEN

I've been working on making my deck my "summer home".  I love to sit out there at night and watch the stars, so I'm working on a moon garden....sort of.  I have a blog friend named Dawn @ Making Home, who has an awesome Moon Garden (and a Mini Moon Garden).  She's been a great inspiration for me on this as well as a great source of information!  Thanks Dawn! It's a slow go and having mostly white flowers is kind of new to me.  But, the biggest component of my deck is always some kind of water feature.
I love this fountain!  I found it several years ago at Lowes....on clearance.  It's cast aluminum and when the water splashes down it makes tiny little pinging sounds almost like music.  Did you know if you put old pennies in your fountain or birdbath, that algae won't grow in it?  It has to be old pennies that are copper.  Try it, it works!  (It works in my outside dog water bowl too.)
I spent a little bit of my birthday money this year on this piece of awesomeness:
It's a gel-fuel wick candle.  I love it because it's granite and has a lot of white in it, so it looks good in the dark, whether I light it or not.  Looks pretty darn good in the day time too!

I have some plants that are starting to enjoy the summer deck as well:
My Moon Flower vine is making quick work of this small trellis.  I have a bigger trellis for it now.  I'm checking it every day for a flower.  They open at night and I can't wait!

This is a Diantha that has white blooms.  I've never had a Diantha before.  I'll have to put it in the ground at the end of the season as it's a perennial, but I like it on my deck for now.

These are some white Begonias.  I was happy to see that they are beginning to flower.  The little dragonfly candle looks so pretty at night with the light shining through her wings.

This pot of white Impatiens seems to be pretty content on its pedestal.  I picked up that column at a garage sale a few years ago.  It was blue.  I spray-painted it white this spring.  Much better.

I have a hanging basket of white Petunias that have a little bit of pink verbena in them.  The butterflies really L-O-V-E this plant!  So far, the Petunias show up the best in the moonlight!

I love dragonflies....have you noticed several of them in these photos?  This is one of my favorites.

I do have some color on my deck....these boxes should be full of color in another month!

And Terry, this next picture is just for you......
It's Purselane!  It is NOT a weed here in the United States!  I'm not sure how you could even think it was!!  Although this looks kind of pink in the picture....it's bright orange and I have one of these in this pot every year.  It loves the heat and my deck is pretty much full sun!

That's the update on my moon garden deck.
Be sure to check out my inspiration Dawn @ Making Home.  She has a great blog with lots of fun stuff!  Thank you Dawn!

  3. Hey there! Stopping by and following you now :) Your moon flower vine looks great!! I have a bunch planted that all have only one leaf set. I'm growing moon flowers and morning glories up around my front porch pillars. I'm going to weave them in together as they grow so the morning glories will open in the Am and the moon flowers will open in the PM.

This is my first year planting moon flowers but I've had morning glories for the past 4 years. I'm so looking forward to watching them bloom in the evening as well.

Love the blog and I'm looking forward to more updates on the moon flowers :)

  4. Danni, I love all you have done to make your deck so nice. I hope you will be able to get a photo of the moon flower. I like the fountain with the musical sound. That was a good find. I also love butterflies so the petunias with the gorgeous butterfly on it was the topper of your post for me today.

Is it fairly dark where you are so you can see the stars really well? When my girls were little we used to lay out in the back yard and watch for shooting stars. But, it seems to be brighter here now so they are not so easy to see. Must be the new stores nearby with all the parking lot lighting. Hope you are doing well!

  5. It's gorgeous. And let me just say that the purselane you have there doesn't look anything like the purselane we have here. Must be different babies because yours looks so nice. I love dragonflies too. Soo pretty.
