HAD TO HAVE IT: 1920s Art Deco Light Cover

I see so many wonderful posts with terrific finds and my first thought is, "Oh I never find cool stuff like that!"  But, that's not true.  I have a lot of fun finds that were found long ago, before blogging.  Today I'm going to share one of them.  I found this Art Deco light cover in a flea market for $2.  I totally had to have it.
I'm currently using it as a plant holder because it has 3 screw holes in it and it seemed perfect for that purpose.
Here's a funny story....When I first bought it, I really had no plan for it but just liked the look of it.  I loved the way it caught the light, so bright, clear and icy looking.  I just set it on a windowsill and admired it.  At the time, we were living in the upstairs of a two story home we purchased as future rental property.  (We lived upstairs while we renovated the first floor.)  One day my door bell rang.  I was a little surprised, I didn't know anyone in that town.  It was the neighbor who lived a few houses behind us.  She wanted to know what I had in that window!!  She had been admiring it for several days, but it was too far away for her to figure out what it was.  Funny...but a little strange to think someone had been looking in my window for a few days.

I found this one on etsy for $35.
I found this one on ebay for $28.
I think I'll just keep my eye out in the flea markets for another one.  In the meantime, this one will remain a plant holder.  (Although, while writing this post, I did have an idea....you know how I am!)
Speaking of fun finds, my friend Lorraine from Miss Flibbertigibbet is showing some great makeovers of some of her own fun finds at the Inspiration Cafe today.  You might want to go over and check it out!  Just click on the image below....

  2. What? You did not know that most of us look in your windows to see the poor craft projects being repurposed? I have a feeling this beautiful light fixture is next on the block. Do something pretty.

  4. It looks great with the potplant and an awesome idea to place it in front of a window. The neighbor must have seen the reflections? {I keep my curtains drawn closed all day - all the windows facing the street that is}

  5. My neighbor across the alley is moving (I'm so sad!) and this weekend I was talking to him and admired a piece of stained glass that was hanging in his enclosed front porch and he walked over and handed it to me. So, you see, sometimes being an obnoxious neighbor really has it payoffs!

    I have made one of these hangings out of an old lightshade also, I use mine for a candle because a) it provides nice light when it's higher up like that, and b) it is safe from my cats starting their tails on fire. You think I kid. I have had TWO cats get up on places they weren't supposed to be and start their tails on fire from candles. Neither one even knew they did it, and flicked the flame out before a raging fire ensued. When you come to my house you will see that all candles are suspended in some fashion. My point is: these work nice for candles...

  6. Oh that's a great find Danni! It reminds me of a sunflower. Sooo pretty! It's always fun to find something fabulous really cheap, and then do research on etsy or ebay and discover that it's worth quite a bit more. I would definitely have picked that up too. It makes a wonderful plant holder.

  11. I think it's quite charming that a neighbour knocked on the door, just to ask what it was.

  18. Um great find! And just a little creepy that a neighbor was looking at your window for days... but flattering too since you have such great taste she came over to ask what it was because she liked it so much :)

  19. The best part is when you find out you've only spent $2 while it goes on the market for $30! I think those pieces will only get pricier, but how cool would it be to find more so cheap! Art Deco is one of my favorite styles but I try to steer clear of gawking in other peoples windows to see it!! Lorraine's pieces are beautiful, by the way, I think I'm sold on frog tape now, too. Her stripes are perfect!

  22. Those light covers do make cool planters and yours are really special. I visited Lorraine's guest post and she did an incredible job on that grain sack table. For some reason I couldn't leave a comment, but I did love here guest post. She's so funny.

  30. Wow, Danni, these are gorgeous. And pretty much perfect for Winter decorating! Humm, would they fit on a vase, like a lid? Could you add crystals through the little holes? I'm really impressed by the plant holder, I'd never have thought of that!

  31. I guess if you paid $2 you can use it as a plant hanger. If I paid thirty, I would have to use it as a light fixture!
