I've always loved the fleur-de-lis image and when I found a sticker on clearance last fall, I snapped it up. I also snapped up another ugly tile at Big Lots. I even remembered to snap a picture before I painted it. Hideous, really.
The last one I picked up was pretty cheap...marked down to $3.00. This one was even less...
Trust me....they're all ugly back there in the clearance section, but I spray painted it with white primer and had a clean slate. I gathered a few items from my craft room.....
...including this great black and white washi tape that I found at Michaels. I almost never buy any craft supplies, but I almost never go in Michaels either. I was drawn to this 12 yd. roll by my 40% off coupon.
I stuck the decal on my tile and added the washi tape around the edges. I used a ruler and an exacto knife to miter the corners.
If you look carefully at my corners, you can see that I was way too lazy to line up the pattern. My friend Tara at Suburble, who inspired this part of the project, did a much nicer job with hers and you can see her project HERE. Thank you for the inspiration Tara!
Anyway, I used some black silk ribbon tied on to the back as a hangar. I kind of thought I was done, but it really did need a little sparkle. Just a few of my favorite stick-on gems. (Less is more, right?)
All in all this project took me about 15 minutes and I have just the spot for it in my soon to be black and white bedroom.
I know I can't put off the furniture painting forever, but at least I can have a little fun while I'm stalling!
Go for it! Paint that furniture! The tile worked out perfectly. It's a sign from the decorating gods.
ReplyDeleteAwesome!
ReplyDeleteI love the tile. And on painting furniture....YIKES! I am all about repurposing everything, but it is hard work. I only say this because I want to paint ours too and dread it. BUT I say go for it!!! You will be happy you did.
ReplyDeleteYour tile is gorgeous. I thought it was a bought one and you were going to make a similar one. Good job. I love the Fleur-De-Lis too. I stenciled them all over my old bathroom walls once in metallic paint. Every time I repainted the bathroom, they would come through the new paint. lol
ReplyDeleteI have to agree, that tile was pretty bad. Thank goodness you saved that tile's life and gave it a much prettier life. Such an easy update. It turned out beautiful. I love that it was inspired by Tara's butterfly washi tape project!
ReplyDeleteThe washi tape and the Fleur-de-Lis decal goes together as if meant to! Lovely, Danni :-) Would love to see the bedroom when done!
ReplyDeleteLine up the pattern??? I was impressed that you mitered it. I'm pretty sure I would have just wrapped the tape ends around the back. THAT, my dear, is why I don't have a blog. Otherwise the blog's name would have to be Cheryl's Wail Away Method.
ReplyDeleteSweet!! Although, I think I liked it better before. It would have gone perfectly with...wait. Never mind. It definitely looks better now. :)
ReplyDeleteSo much better than the picture I hung last week of a bird. Geez I have no taste. I'll be back. I need the help.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you took that ugly tile and turned it into this. So pretty! I think it'll look great in your bedroom!
ReplyDeleteYou are going to paint furniture!?! I cannot wait to see this happen. I hope there will be a stencil involved and some distressing and some waxing. I am so excited I almost forgot to mention the tile is fantastic - you used washi tape and bought craft supplies. You are on your way to having your personal Horror Monster!
ReplyDeleteI would like to ask someone what the original tile went with.
The tile looks way chic! I know how hard it is to gather the courage to make a biiiiig paint change - I say go for it. Mainly for selfish reasons, 'cause I want to see it!
ReplyDeleteLove the tile Danni! The fleur-de-lis is one of my favourite images too. I really want to see your painted furniture so... just do it! It's like going swimming in cold water, it's best to just dive right in. Once the initial shock passes, you'll totally love it.
ReplyDeleteWhat was that horrible thing before? Glad you came along and saved it from itself.
ReplyDeleteI'm still working up my nerve to paint that dresser at my place too. The tile looks great. I bet your furniture is going to turn out awesome when you get to it.
ReplyDeleteIf this tile project is any indication of how your painted furniture will turn out you need to start right away. But I do know how you feel. I've been putting off trying some chalk painting for awhile now, and still haven't gotten my nerve up.
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever way to start off your bedroom, kinda like dipping your toe in the water before you jump in :) How elegant this will look in your new room, and how easy to make. Did you know that the fleur-de-lis is on the St Louis flag? How apropos that you chose that symbol. Very pretty and pinning ~ Amy
ReplyDeleteGood for you for rescuing that tile from a life of hideousness! I definitely would have walked right past it! And thank you so much for citing me as your inspiration for the washi trim. I think your project is fantastic! The sparkle is a nice touch!
ReplyDeleteJust think the posts you can write about refinishing your furniture? If you can make that tile look good, your furniture will be awesome :)
ReplyDeleteI need this! What a tile transformation! Danni, this is so pretty!
ReplyDeletePretty tile, Danni! It's going to look awesome in the room! :)
ReplyDeleteEww tha tile, can you imagine someone having it in their house, I'm surprised the former mansion owners didn't! I LOVE your tile in fact even though my last silo hill farm rip off of a tile didn't work so great I'm doing this, perfect for my craft room :)
ReplyDeleteFun project and you alwas make projects look so easy... I still have my cheese round sitting in the pantry waiting for inspiration! (and now I have 2 waiting!)
ReplyDeleteI love simple projects like this that really pack a punch!! Can't wait to see your bedroom "painted"! Go for it!!~~Angela
ReplyDeleteWow that was one colorful tile before you painted it! Love the fleur-de-lis upgrade though. Can't wait to see the furniture!
ReplyDeleteDanni this is beautiful! I love black and white as base colors and then having other accent colors..like red or turquoise! LOVE this project!
ReplyDeleteI will stand and chant to encourage you... "paint, paint, paint".
ReplyDeleteBliss
Get cracking girlfriend -
ReplyDeleteI love the plaque - it's really pretty - but it needs matching furniture now!
XOX
I'll stand beside Bliss and chant too
Danni, this is beautiful! And that's tape on the edges, no way! Love it. My sister loves black and white - maybe I will make her something like this for her birthday. Thanks for sharing you wonderful creativity.
ReplyDeleteHugs to you!
You always have cute projects to make on the cheap! Are you painting your furniture two tone black and white or some pieces black and some pieces white?
ReplyDeleteLooks lovely! You're inspiring me to go out and buy some washi tape, which I have yet to try.
