LAUNDRY ROOM MAKEOVER - MISSON ACCOMPLISHED

So back in March, I put my laundry area shame out there for the whole blog world to see when I shared my Junk in Our Trunks post for Tongue-in-Cheek Tuesday.  I figured this would force me to actually deal with that area.  (It's really an area off of the side of my kitchen as opposed to a room by itself.)
I've finally cleaned it all up and I'm here to tell you....it's better.
Now I know that doesn't look like much...but there's more...so much more.  The problem with my laundry area was I had these awesome shelves...that I couldn't get to because the little deep freeze was in the way.  So...stuff just got shoved up there by Sam and never seen again by me.
Yep...there are two shelves ...one is directly behind the deep freeze.  The first thing I did was move the deep freeze out of that spot and pull it closer to the kitchen.
Ahhhh, much better already.   I suppose I should mention that I had to clean out the area out from under it too because if you'll remember, it was a disaster.  I still had a pumpkin under there from October....
Better now and the pumpkin went to the trash.  With the deep freeze out of the way, I could clean up the shelves and do a little organizing.  The first thing I did was move a small, shallow cabinet into that space.  It holds some odds and ends kitchen stuff that I don't use very often.  I spent a total of $5 at the Dollar Tree and grabbed some containers in green, because I LOVE green.  Check it...seriously...scroll back up and look at those shelves and then this...
More on those shelves in just a minute, but lets move on.  Here was the top of my hot water heater, before and after....

If you'll remember, I joked about how convenient it was that my Swiffer dusters fit right under that hose.  Well, if you'll look at the picture above, you'll see that it now has a better home in one of those hanging baskets that I also cleaned out.  I put a plastic basket up there to throw any oddball stuff in.  Way better, right?
Then there was the business of that cute, chippy shelf that my friend gave me.  If you'll recall my original post, when I was editing the pics, I discovered 2 cans of beer on them that I didn't even know were there.  Again, before and after....
I still want to paint it bright white, but I love that it's on wheels and I can roll it away next to the washer now....
And last, but certainly not least....if there is are hooks available anywhere in my home....they get used....and overused...
Really, we're like children, we can't stop ourselves.  The only answer for us is to take them away, or use them in a better way.  In this case, I hung my antique glass washboard up there instead.
Now,  I ask you, is it really fair to call this a makeover instead of a clean-up?  I mean, I didn't paint or anything.  Well, I did add a few decorative touches, so I'm going to justify calling it a makeover because I used a lot of this.....
Oh yeah!  Washi tape is the quickest, cheapest way to cute up anything...from shelves, to containers...

I got the idea to cute up my trash can from my friend Marci at Stone Cottage Adventures.  You can see hers HERE.  I did mine like this....
I even put washi tape on my washer and dryer!  The adhesive is not very agressive and will peel right off when I'm tired of it.  For now, I love it!
Major bonus...now that I have more room in there, I can use the pull-out shelf between my washer and dryer for folding!
I even added a strip of it above my antique wash board....
And finally...I had a sign back there that you could never see.  It was a metal sign and I just used some magnets to hang it on the fuse box cover......
Prompty done...right!
Now I do have some finishing up in there to do....like paint that rolling shelf/cabinet, cute up the fuse box cover (hate the grey), and hide that hot water heater.  But for now....I'm calling it done and glad for it!  It's bright, airy and has a punch of polka-dot fun.
I think I'd better thank the TIC girls for making me bare my soul and my shame and then get after it!  If you are wondering if we are doing a Tongue-in-Cheek post for May, we are not.  We are all terribly busy this month and will announce a theme for June soon!

  2. Well I would definitely classify that as a makeover Danni!!!
    Great job -
Are you going to hang around in there for awhile now lol?
I'm shocked beyond belief that you didn't do something with that pumpkin -
Danni - throwing out a pumpkin?

  6. Very nice Danni. My laundry isn't my favourite room in the house either but its probably the most used. Lucky its under the house and not many people can see it.

  7. Well done, Danni! The washi tape really pulled everything "together" - very neat and tidy and I think bright white is most suitable for a laundry :-)

  9. All your work here is like a gift you keep giving yourself every time you walk in there. So cute!

What did you do with the Budweisers?

  10. I am thinking of stacking my washer and dryer. Was it hard to do? My room is small and needs a redo. Love your organizing and the edging on the shelves.

  11. Look at you! You did it. You got that room cleaned and organized. You must feel like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders. It looks great. I love the simple addition of the washi tape. Great job!

  13. It think using washi tape qualifies as "dry" painting. This look great! I do have a question. Did you get the Little Green Machine because it would match your decor? Come on, be honest.

I don't see the mint green flower thingie with a metal piece in the center. It was green! Bring back the flower!

  14. Washi tape miracles! So smart to cover the shelving edges with it. Must show this post to my SIL.
At my FIL's house, that gray fuse box cover is painted to match the wall color...it's in the middle of the kitchen wall!
Lots of hard work done here, Danni...you deserve a treat. ;)

  17. Danni, it looks lovely. I remember how you made us laugh with your good humor on clutter during Junk in Your Trunk TIC. I need plenty of good humor over here, but I am most definitely inspired to organize a few rooms now! The washi tape is such a cute touch, I bet if feels great to walk in there now!! Thanks for the inspiration ~ Amy

  19. It looks fantastic! I love the washi tape around the shelves. I'm also totally jealous of your baskets that hand under the shelves. I've been trying to find some but I can only find them in American stores and the cheapest shipping I've found is $40. I'll be putting some on my list for when I go to the US this summer.

  20. absolutely fantastic! Good for you, bet it feels great to walk in there now.

Where does one find this washi tape stuff?? I could use it right now. What a fabulous idea to edge your shelves with it. Looks amazing. I want some. NOW.

  21. Beer? YOU FOUND BEER??? That's like the holy grail of laundry rooms!!!! That alone had to make all that work worthwhile.... :)

  22. BEST. LAUNDRY ROOM. EVER.

    Wowzer.

Quick question: am I technically "allowed" here given that I nearly set my house on fire when using a glue gun for my son's First Communion banner?

  23. Love it! Great job, Danni! The washi tape is an especially nice touch, and what's so funny is that I have a sign just like that (slightly different, but it says the same words and has a vintage lady scrubbing clothes) in my laundry room.

Of course, my laundry room looks a lot like your before picture times 100. So I have some work to do. ;)

  24. Oh wow Danni - your laundry looks awesome!!! Wow you worked so hard! I love the washi tape - I need some! Poor pumpkin tho' :-)

  25. Danni, the room looks fresh and cheerful! Love the washi tape on the washer idea....I have a new washing machine coming today and maybe I'll do that to mine! Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day!

  26. So that's where you've been hiding! Your laundry room looks so good Danni! Wow girl! You have been busy. GREAT job! I love the washi tape idea. I wish it were cheaper, I'd cover my whole dryer top, it's so rusted and scratched up, gross... Having a husband who can fix anything is great, but I kinda wish the 18 year old washer and dryer would finally DIE.

  30. Danni - THAT IS A MAKEOVER! Great job! So fresh, clean and organized! I love your antique washboard and the washi tape, nice touch. Any chance you could head my way and help me with the dungeon of a laundry room I have to tackle...??? :)

  31. Washi Tape qualifies this as a makeover!!! Awesome job:) My laundry room is a corner of the basement at the base of the stairs, with the sump pump between the washer & dryer! My deep freeze is in the garage, because it won't make it down the stairs.

  32. Well how about you! To tell you the truth, your laundry room didn't seem too messy to me originally. But it does indeed look lovely now. Love the washi tape! I never would have thought of that. Possibly because I've never owned or used any washi tape!

  33. WAY TO GO DANNI!! I didn't even think it looked bad before you started, but wow. Looks awesome. You have given me a new respect for Washi Tape. I just might have to give that stuff a try. Cheers.

  34. Danni, this looks AWESOME!!!! I mean REALLY REALLY AWESOME! I want to actually do laundry in your laundry room! The washi tape is such a fun addition. Brilliant!

  35. Our laundry room is right off the garage, which is how we typically get in the house. So it's also where all our junk lands. And it's a mess. :/

  36. Nice clean up. The tape does make everything cuter for sure.

  37. Danni,
A job well done! The question is, "How long will it stay like this?" I hope it's serving you well.
