BATHROOM RENOVATION 2015

In my last post, I said my next one would be my bathroom renovation, so here we go....
I'm going to start by saying that it's really hard to get a good picture of a room that's long and narrow.  You may remember how this bathroom looked when we bought this house a year ago....
...it was longer and even more narrow then.  It had a huge mirror and a long vanity with dual sinks.  The toilet and tub/shower had it's own little room at the back.  Pay attention to that little window back there because it's going to disappear as this whole thing gets completely gutted.  Part of this little bathroom, along with a huge hall closet and another bedroom closet were all going to be renovated to make TWO bathrooms.  The first one, the main bath, which you are seeing today, and the master bath, of which their wasn't one and which I'll save for another day.
Anyway,  I had a lot of ideas for this one main bathroom.....these from pinterest.....
and these from DesignDreams by Anne who has renovated her bathroom more than once and I loved them all!
I wanted lots of those pretty blues and bright whites.  I wanted to paint my ceiling a bold color.  I wanted tile and I wanted a really deep tub.  Mostly...I wanted that ugly bathroom GONE!

We started with getting rid of the tub.
If you look really closely, at the right of this picture where the tub used to be, you can see how we broke into the back wall of a really long hall closet and also the side wall of one of the two master bedroom closets.  You can also see that I still had a window in the bathroom at this point.  (Oh how I dreamed of glass block in that window!)
This is the opposite wall where a lovely, but way too big, linen closet was being torn out.
Gone is that huge mirror and the dual sink countertop.
Now we're starting with a clean slate, so let's reconfigure the walls and all of the plumbing because again, we are using part of this bathroom to make a master bathroom.

Now I made the above picture really big so you could see what I'm talking about when I say we're making two bathrooms.  (You can also see how awesomely deeeeeeeeeeep my new bathtub is.  No...it is not a jetted tub; I'm way too much of a germophobe for that.)  You can also see that this is exactly where I'm about to lose that window because the wall needs to be right smack in the middle of it.  There was no other choice and I can tell you that I tried everything to keep it, but no.
So if you look at the picture below, then the above diagram makes a little more sense......In other words, the toilet for the master bath is right behind the fish tank.
The toilet in this bathroom got moved to the back of the wall and that window was right in the middle.  *sigh*
Anyway, my awesomely deep tub got a pretty shower curtain with the exact colors I wanted, and a light above.
So this would be where the vanity/sinks were originally.  Check out my blue ceiling, it's probably my favorite part of this whole bathroom.  Weird, I know.
I went round and round with my guys over the fact that I did NOT want a built-in vanity.  Just a pair of sinks with a cabinet in between.  They said I would be sorry......I am not.  I cannot deal with clutter and I think the less surface space in there, the less chance I have of clutter.
Another thing I love about my bathroom is the ambient lighting.  It's normally so bright and white, but sometimes when I want to soak in a big, long, hot bubble bath in my deep tub, I don't want it to be quite so glaringly bright, so I hit the ambient lighting....
Kind of changes things dramatically.  Definitely more relaxing and I can't deny that the fish tank and the candle add to it.
Oh... and that pretty sail boat picture painted by Anne of DesignDreams by Anne?  It looks perfect in it's new crate/frame and if you missed it, you can read about it by clicking on the link below.

So there you have it...my bathroom renovation.  I would like to add, that in our old house, we had one teeny, tiny bathroom.  In this house, I now have 2 and 1/2 baths.  Ahhhhhhhhh......

  2. I am so jealous! Beautiful! Can't wait to see the master bath, too. Fish tank in the bathroom? Freakin' cool, lady! If only I had a place for one. Even my big master doesn't have a room cuz I went with the oversized tub and shower and dual sinks. Never say never, though. I may try to squeeze one between the sinks now that I see yours.

  5. Your bathroom looks so cool and inviting with the ambient lighting - what a great way to relax! I was always a tub girl but opted to remove the tub in our master bath in favor of a closet for my hubby so I wouldn't have to share my walk-in. When you remodel you have the opportunity to make it like you want and you did a fabulous job in creating this delightful room!

  6. I love it, Danni. I seriously thought about blue and white for our new bathroom, but went with gray and white because I get so bored--now, all I have to do is change up towels and accessories and I will get a whole new look. We also got a really deep tub (not jetted) because the one we had has the overflow at 12 inches, and one simply cannot soak in 12 inches. The old one was cast iron, and we gave it to the plumber because he has a friend who rescues horses and he's going to use it as a trough. Love that you took your inspiration from Anne's painting!

  7. So tranquil for you to relax in that tub. Love the idea of the blue ceiling - maybe it can offset the lack of a window. Great job. After seeing the destruction I may not want a new bath!

  8. (Danni, I hope you don't get this comment twice - for some reason my original disappeared.) I'm so jealous! We've been in this house since '98 and I've been dying to steal a bedroom closet to expand our 2-piece master bathroom. You must be so pleased to have two reconfigured bathrooms in the house. Love the hits of blue!

  9. It's great Danni, so fresh and bright with the blue and white. I love the coloured ceiling and I'm sure it makes it really cosy in there - especially with the ambient lighting - when you're relaxing in the bath.

  11. I admire your courage in doing the renovation and relocating the pipes and tube... Looks like a very huge project to me. Right now I am having a slab leak and I feel paralyzed by the fear of the pending repair. Literally fear...

  13. What a peaceful spa look you created! J'adore the ceiling! And what a genius idea to eliminate extra flat space to avoid clutter! I somehow feel that's a game changer...now where in my life can I implement this fabulous philosophy? Off to apply it anywhere I can think of!

  15. I wonder if you might be doing something with the door in the last picture. It looks so plain. Maybe paint it or wallpaper? Maybe make it look paneled with a faux look. It needs something. Love the rest of the space though!

  18. What an amazing makeover Danni! I love everything about it, and as a girl who loves coloured ceilings I don't think it's weird that the pretty blue ceiling is your favourite part. I redid my upstairs bath in blue and white six years ago and I still love it. It's a combo I never get tired of for some reason. Fabulous job, and I envy your deep tub.

  20. Great that you could find the space between the long bathroom and closets to make two. More than one bathroom and a soaker tub are absolute musts for me. Love the blue ceiling! Also love the idea of the fish tank in the bathroom but I'm afraid that would just be a snack dish for my cats.
